Chris Anker Sorensen died on a bicycle, the object of his passion.
The International Cycling Union announced on Saturday the death of the former Danish cyclist, winner in particular of a stage on the Giro in 2010 and the prize for combativeness in 2012 on the Tour de France.
His death would have occurred, according to several media, in a road accident.
“We suffered a tragic loss today with the passing of former professional cyclist and journalist Chris Anker Sorensen,” the UCI said on its Twitter account, sending its “thoughts” to Sorensen's family and loved ones, as well as the Danish Cycling Federation.
According to Belgian press organs confirming information from the Danish television channel TV 2 SPORT, Chris Anker Sorensen died in Zeebrugge, on the sidelines of the 2021 Worlds.
After cycling, a career as a consultant
After his racing career, he became a consultant for Danish television and was in Belgium for the world road cycling championships, which will start on Sunday with the time trial between Knokke-Heist and Bruges.
According to Belgian television Sporza, Sorensen was on a bicycle trip when he was involved in an accident with a car.
Chris Anker Sorensen mainly wore the shirts of the CSC, Saxo Bank and Tinkoff teams.
In addition to the 8th stage of the Tour of Italy in 2010, he also won the 6th stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné in 2008 and the Danish road champion title in 2015, his last major success.
