Driver assistance technologies such as Intelligent Speed Limiter and Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go already help drivers stay within speed limits.
The geofencing speed limit enforcement system is potentially more flexible and efficient than in-vehicle systems, and could in the future be applied to both commercial and passenger vehicles from Ford.
The researchers are using two 100% electric E-Transit vans to analyze the influence of the speed limit in terms of improving traffic flow and reducing the risk of accidents.
The trials extend to all 30 km/h zones in the center of Cologne as well as some 50 km/h and 30 km/h zones elsewhere in the city.
In the future, Ford's geofencing speed limit enforcement system could allow drivers to set their own geofencing zones at speeds of up to 20 km/h, including at depots and private facilities.
Speed limits could also be set dynamically, to take into account local hazards, temporary road works and the time of day.
