The violent fire which broke out a few kilometers from Marseille, in the Bouches-du-Rhône, has not yet been brought under control this Wednesday morning, even if the situation seems to be improving. The firefighters on site announce that around 1,025 hectares of pine trees have already been devastated by the flames. About 1,200 people were evacuated. 

A night of firefighting for the firefighters in the Martigues sector, in the Bouches-du-Rhône, a few kilometers from Marseille. The fire, which broke out on Tuesday afternoon, has already ravaged around 1,025 hectares of pine trees, according to a latest assessment of the teams mobilized on the spot. Gérald Darmanin, Minister of the Interior, went to the scene during the night. "For the moment the human toll affects light injuries but finally homes are destroyed, vehicles are also", he announced before welcoming the mobilization of firefighters and departments on the ground.

1,200 people evacuated, 14 injured firefighters

If the fire is not yet under control, the situation seems more favorable on Wednesday. Air support will resume in the morning while the mistral should gradually weaken over the course of the day. About 1,200 firefighters are engaged in fighting the flames and reinforcements from other neighboring departments are expected. If the balance sheet shows no casualties, 14 firefighters were poisoned by smoke. The Minister of the Interior also deplored a "tragedy" for the biodiversity of the affected area.

Columns of smoke and flames that were visible from the city of Marseille that night. About 1,200 people, including many tourists staying in campsites were evacuated that night. Some, gathered on the beaches of the Blue Coast, by the sea under the supervision of the Marseille firefighters, relaying the police officers who had requisitioned pleasure boats. A census of the homes affected by the flames is currently underway.
