The 2020 edition of the Skate Canada Figure Skating Grand Prix, scheduled for October 30 and 31 in Ottawa, has been canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, officials said on Wednesday.
The Canadian Figure Skating Federation consulted with politicians at the municipal and provincial levels before canceling the event, which was to be contested without spectators.
"The organization of Skate Canada International is no longer viable," the organization said in a statement, citing the health and safety of skaters, officials and volunteers.
“This year has never been like any other and we have seen significant challenges in the operation of competitions due to the global pandemic,” said Debra Armstrong, Executive Director of Skate Canada.
"Due to constantly changing requirements across the country and the recent 28-day shutdown in hot spots across Ontario, including Ottawa, it became apparent that it would not be possible to host this event. . We look forward to continuing the legacy of the Skate Canada International in 2021 ".
This competition, one of six in the International Skating Union (ISU) Grand Prix series, was only to feature athletes who live and train in Canada.
The season is scheduled to begin with Skate America in Las Vegas from October 23 to 25.
