About fifty migrants "adrift" on a wooden boat were rescued Thursday off the Italian island of Lampedusa by the Ocean Viking , found an AFP journalist on board the humanitarian ship of SOS Mediterranean.

In total, the NGO counted "51 people including a woman and five minors". The vast majority are Pakistanis, who were brought back on board the NGO's ambulance boat, following an operation which took place about thirty kilometers from Lampedusa, "at the crossroads Maltese and Italian search and rescue, "said SOS Mediterranean.

"We therefore asked the authorities of these two countries for a safe place of disembarkation," the organization continued.
