• The Nantes PS town hall is embarking on "the ecological reconquest of the city".

  • Until 2026, it plans to develop around fifty sites to preserve biodiversity in the urban environment.

They will disembark in the morning.

From this Friday, a couple of black sheep from Ouessant will be the new tenants of the moat of the castle of the Dukes, in the city center of Nantes, to play with small natural lawn mowers.

“The ambition is the ecological reconquest of the city, beyond the enhancement of our parks and gardens, explains Johanna Rolland, the mayor (PS) of Nantes, who presented this Wednesday what is part of a more global, called "Biodiversity Oasis".

The ambition is to fight against global warming and heat islands, but also to meet the inhabitants' need to recharge their batteries.

In the basins of the castle, more than 4,000 plants were reintroduced last spring.

More than 6 hectares of surface

Five other sites to preserve biodiversity in the urban environment have already been delivered in recent months in different areas of the city.

Quai Ceineray, Nantes gardeners have for example been busy pursuing the “ecological corridor”, the objective of which is to connect this part of urban Erdre to the wild Erdre.

Here again, local species have been planted.

“Since there is no longer just concrete here, we have observed the return of new species of birds, because they can cross the city more easily than before”, estimates for example Olivier Ganne, representative of the association. Living Brittany, citing gray herons or cormorants, attracted by fish and eels.

On other sites, woodlands, hedges, or educational spaces have been developed, in particular to serve as a refuge for insects and small fauna.

In total, around twenty projects are planned over the next two years (over more than 6 hectares), around fifty by the end of the mandate, in order to recreate green spaces, ponds or grazed meadows.

On this subject, other sheep are expected at the Crapa park, on the island of Nantes, next year.
