Munich (dpa) - FC Bayern Munich and its long-time professional Javi Martínez have officially announced the end of their cooperation this summer.

As the German record champions announced on Tuesday, the expiring contract will, as expected, “amicably” not be extended in the summer.

Where the future of the 32-year-old Spaniard lies was not disclosed.

"Javi was an important cornerstone of our team for nine years, which has achieved historic achievements during this time," said the future CEO Oliver Kahn.

At the end of the season, in addition to Martínez, David Alaba, Jérôme Boateng and coach Hansi Flick will also bid farewell.

For the record sum of 40 million euros in the Bundesliga at the time, the Munich team signed the defensive all-rounder from Athletic Bilbao in 2012. “It was a difficult decision when we brought Javi Martinez on in the summer of 2012 because the transfer of 40 million euros at the time was an absolute record for us. The decision was spot on, ”said CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

Martínez, who was praised by sports director Hasan Salihamidzic as a “difference player”, celebrated eight championships, five cup wins, two victories at the Club World Cup and two Champions League triumphs with the Munich team.

"I lived this club, always gave everything for it and I am very happy about the many titles we have won together," said the former world and European champion.

"Javi Martínez will always have a special place in the history of this association," said President Herbert Hainer.
