Like deja vu.

The white plan was again activated by the Martinique University Hospital, a month after being lifted, due to a resurgence of the Covid-19 epidemic in this Caribbean island, we learned on Friday.

“The white plan and the related provisions are reactivated as of today,” wrote the management of the Martinique University Hospital on Thursday in an internal note that AFP was able to consult.

"The influx of patients in the emergency room", "the rise of the Covid epidemic" and "operating difficulties" justify the reactivation of this particular mobilization and organization device of the hospital, according to the CHUM .

"The white plan is an ability to act, greater agility," said Jérôme Le Brière, director of the Martinique University Hospital, on the antenna of the local radio RCI.

“What is close to my heart is to sanctuarize the holidays to come for teams which are already tired”, he tempered.

The management of the public hospital in Martinique wants "as much as possible not to deprogram medical surgery", he explained.

Medical support could strengthen the CHU in the coming weeks, particularly through recruitment.

"A new sublineage of the Omicron variant"

The Covid-19 epidemic has resumed an upward curve in Martinique.

During the week of May 30 to June 5, 7,924 new cases were recorded.

By way of comparison, 2,022 new positive cases of Covid-19 had been recorded during the week of April 25 to May 1, a few days before the lifting of the white plan.

The white plan remained in effect from July 12, 2021 to May 4, 2022 on the island.

During the first week of June, 35 patients suffering from Covid-19 were hospitalized at the CHUM, including 4 in critical care/resuscitation.

"The installation of a new sub-lineage of the Omicron variant is confirmed in Martinique", specifies Public Health France in its weekly bulletin.

For Professor André Cabié, head of the infectious diseases department of the CHUM, questioned on Martinique the 1st, this mutation of the virus "is transmitted more easily than the first".

In this island where only 45.4% of the population aged 12 and over has a complete vaccination schedule, 943 deaths, reported by the Martinique University Hospital, have been deplored since the start of the epidemic.
