October 18, 2021Facebook announced that it plans to hire 10,000 workers in the European Union over the next five years to develop a new IT platform. The company said in a blog post Sunday that highly skilled workers will help build 'Metaverse', a futuristic notion for connecting people online that includes augmented and virtual reality. Facebook executives have touted 'Metaverse' as the next big innovation after mobile internet while also grappling with other issues like antitrust crackdowns, testimony from a former employee who denounced the irregularities and concerns about how the company handles political and vaccine misinformation on its platform.

"Europe is extremely important to Facebook, these jobs are part of our ongoing investment in the region and a vote of confidence in the strength of the European tech industry and the potential of European tech talent, also here in Italy. Facebook is all 'beginning of an exciting journey to help build the IT platform of the future, and European talents will shape it right from the start ": declares Luca Colombo, Country Director of Facebook Italy.
