Two Eurofighters of the Luftwaffe triggered a loud bang during an aviation security mission early on Friday evening, which could be heard in large parts of the Rhine-Main area.

At around 5:20 p.m. the windows in Frankfurt trembled.

As ear witnesses testify, the sound could also be heard in Wiesbaden and Darmstadt.

As the Luftwaffe command announced on Friday evening, the two aircraft had ascended in Neuburg (Bavaria) to establish contact with a civilian machine with which radio contact had previously been broken.

In doing so, the planes broke the sound barrier.

"Since the time factor plays an important role in such situations, the aircraft broke the sound barrier, which can often be heard within a radius of 60 to 80 kilometers," said the spokesman at the Luftwaffe command.

He was unable to provide any further information about the civilian machine.

A supersonic boom occurs when an aircraft flies faster than the noise from its engines spreads.

Numerous residents of Frankfurt and the surrounding area exchanged information about the bang on the Internet service Twitter.

In the Vordertaunus "the whole floor wobbled", wrote one user.

Similar case in September

A few weeks ago, a similar case caused quite a stir.

At that time, two jets broke the sound barrier on their way to an alarm mission.

According to the Air Force, one reason for an alarm can be that there is no radio contact with civil aircraft.

As a rule, however, according to the information, such use is based on comparatively harmless causes.
