English Rugby Federation boycott social media

Rugby in England joins football and other sports in boycotting social media this weekend in a unified stand against racism and discrimination.

The English Rugby Federation announced today that all its channels of communication will be subject to temporary blocking.

The clubs competing in the domestic league and the English Premier League will join the boycott, along with the Premier League clubs.

"The scene of solidarity against racism on the Internet" will take place between Friday afternoon and Monday evening, and includes support for the English Rugby Football Association and the game of cricket in England and Wales, the statement said.

Sara Hunter, captain of the England women's national team, wrote before the confrontation with France tomorrow, "No professional or athlete should be subjected to insult, racism or harassment through social media."

"We have all seen how social media can bring fans and players together, but this does not mean that the insults can be ignored," she added.
