The first flight to Mars will take place within 10 years.

This is the promise made by Elon Musk, the boss of SpaceX.

And again, that's a high estimate.

To get to the Red Planet, “at best, it will take 5 years.

At worst, 10 years, ”said the billionaire during Lex Fridman's podcast relayed by Phonandroid.

Elon Musk praised the qualities of his Starship rocket which should allow such an adventure.

"Starship is the most complex and advanced rocket that has ever been manufactured," said the boss of SpaceX.

And to add: “It's a lot.

It really is on a whole new level.

It must be admitted that the Starship project gave satisfaction after a successful landing last May.

A dozen flights are now scheduled to take place in 2022.

A huge cost

Perhaps the biggest problem in joining Mars is not the technological solution but the cost of such a mission. “There is a certain cost per ton up to the surface of Mars that we can reach to establish a self-sufficient city and beyond that we cannot afford,” said Elon Musk. The costing of this adventure makes you dizzy: “Right now, you couldn't go to Mars with 1,000 billion dollars. No amount of money could get you to Mars. We have to make it really possible ”.

At the top of the ranking of the richest men on the planet, Elon Musk may empty his bank account, that would not be enough to make the rocket take off for Mars.

Even if he got the unlikely help of Jeff Bezos, boss of Amazon and another space visionary, who follows him in this ranking.
