The 12th edition of the Alexandria International Theater Festival, "Theater Without Production", was launched, dedicated to the name of the late comedian Samir Ghanem.
15 bids from Egypt, Libya, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Algeria, Tunisia, Spain, Romania and Kosovo are competing for the "Creative Solutions Award".
In the opening, the festival honored actress Ilham Shaheen for her theatrical career, which includes more than 20 plays, during which she stood in front of major stars such as Nour El-Sharif, Mahmoud Abdel Aziz, Youssef Shaaban, and the last of them is Samir Ghanem.
In his opening speech, festival president Ibrahim Al-Furn said: "This session witnesses the launch of a new name for the important and different experience founded by Dr. Jamal Yacout, as the festival's base has been expanded at the Arab and international levels, while preserving the festival's philosophy based on the slogan: Imagination, not money."
The festival was established in 2008 under the name “Theater Without Production” with the aim of shedding light on low-cost works based more on the performance of actors, and took different names over its successive sessions until it began to attract international shows since its sixth session.
The program of the 12th session, extending to the 29th of this month, includes six training workshops in directing, theater criticism, fashion, improvisation, and scenography design.
Shows and workshops are organized in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Freedom Center for Creativity, the Lycée Theater, the Jesuit Cultural Center and the Anfoushi Culture Palace.
The opening at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina was followed by the festival's first performance, "The Sultan" from Qatar, directed by Salem Al-Mansoori.
