Security forces in Egypt released Ida, the world's first robot plastic artist, after arresting her and her inventor for 10 days, when they came to the country to attend the largest international art exhibition in front of the Great Pyramid.
The robot was detained by the Egyptian border guards due to security concerns about the cameras in its eyes that enable it to draw, according to its designer, Aidan Miller, who told British media that the British ambassador to Egypt intervened in the matter.
"I can't take her eyes off her," Aidan Miller told the Guardian. "Let's be really clear about this, she's not a spy."
The newspaper said that the arrest of "Ida" caused a diplomatic controversy between Cairo and London, and quoted her British inventor Miller as saying shortly before her release: "The British ambassador was working all night to release Ida .. it is really stressful."
The British Embassy in Cairo expressed its happiness with the resolution of the case.
Miller stated that border guards detained Ida first because she had a modem, and then because her eyes had cameras that she used to draw and paint. "I can get rid of the modems, but I can't close her eyes," Miller said.
The robot "Ida" was named after British mathematician and computer pioneer Ada Lovelace.
