Europe 1 Studio SEASON 2021 - 202205h00, July 04, 2022

In the mid-1970s, the epic of the Greens made the whole of France dream.

AS Saint-Etienne will almost rise to the roof of Europe.

But the dream will turn into a nightmare.

In this second episode of the podcast “Les Géants” embodied by Jacques Vendroux, footballer Dominique Bathenay brings us back to life with the meteoric rise of the Saint-Etienne team on the international scene in 1975-1976.

From the incredible match against Dynamo kyiv, to the terrible defeat with the famous “square posts” in the final against Bayern Munich, he recounts through emotionally charged memories how “green madness” was born.

The epic of the Greens is a great adventure in the history of football which actually began on October 1, 1969, during the European Cup match between ASSE and Bayern Munich.

That evening, the Greens, including player Dominique Bathenay, won 2-0 against an almost unbeatable team.

It is at this precise moment that the Greens become aware of their own potential, but also of all that remains to be done to become European champions.

In 1975, the city of Saint-Etienne was in full industrial decline.

Football is the only escape for the population.

It is therefore a team that is more united than ever which is embarking on the quest for the European Cup... This podcast is a Europe 1 Studio production.
