• The news is relayed among opponents of vaccination against Covid-19: Denmark has decided to suspend the sending of invitations to its population to be vaccinated.

  • The Danish health authorities have not disavowed the vaccination: their decision is motivated by several factors, including the high vaccination coverage rate in the population.

  • People who have not been vaccinated can still do so.

“A new country which opens its eyes”, “to be fair”, “one more country which is added to the list of those who have understood the deception”… Opponents of vaccination against Covid-19 rejoiced an announcement from Denmark: the country would have “suspended vaccination on its territory”, according to a message circulating on social networks.

Denmark has suspended its vaccination program, but it is only a partial stop "for this season".

People who have not yet been vaccinated or people in the process of being vaccinated still have the possibility of being vaccinated against Covid-19, the Danish Health Authority said on April 26.

“We always recommend vaccination to people at a particularly increased risk of serious development of Covid-19, explains Bolette Søborg, head of unit for the health authority, in this press release.

This is especially true for people over 40 and for pregnant women if they are not vaccinated.

We also continue to recommend that you complete your vaccination course.

A fourth dose is offered to people "whose immune system is very weakened", such as cancer patients.

The cessation of sending invitations to be vaccinated is only temporary, adds the Danish Health Authority, which specifies that “the program will resume this autumn”.

Why retain this autumnal horizon?

“The virus that causes Covid-19 is an unstable virus that can mutate, just as we saw with the Omicron variant.

At the same time, we expect to see an increase in infection as we move from fall into winter.

If the health authorities have decided to suspend “for this season” the sending of invitations to be vaccinated, it is because of several factors: “a number of stable hospitalizations” which they expect to see “decrease soon”, “the arrival of spring” and the stabilization of the epidemic and finally the high number of people vaccinated in the Danish population, coupled with contaminations with the Omicron variant.

“Total population immunity is therefore high,” writes the Danish Health Authority.

A total of 76% of adult Danes have received a third dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.

This rate rises to 88% among 50-64 year olds and 95% among those over 65 years old.

Among minors, where the Danish authorities recommend the injection of two doses, 81% of 12-17 year olds received two doses and 37% of 5-11 year olds.

Already in mid-February, the Danish Health Authority had announced that it was considering suspending the vaccination invitation program, "due to the high level of immunity in the population".

“The high vaccination coverage in Denmark means that we can manage the high incidence of infection without severe disease,” she added.
