INTERVIEW

The Assize Court of Haute-Saône on Saturday sentenced Jonathann Daval to 25 years of criminal imprisonment for the murder of his wife Alexia Fouillot in October 2017. "It is both reassuring and interesting about the new place that is made within the assize courts for feminicides ", believes Me Isabelle Steyer, lawyer at the Paris bar, Saturday on Europe 1." The short sentences that were previously pronounced (for feminicides) did not allow to focus on the seriousness and the dramatic consequences that this caused for the victim and for his family. "

"We were around 7-8 years old, 10 years maximum"

The lawyer recalls that so far "the penalties were low".

"We were around 7-8 years old, 10 years maximum," she explains.

"I think the Advocate General wanted to express the idea that these are murders with aggravating circumstances because the aggressor knows everything about the victim," adds Me Isabelle Steyer.

"It is a crime that goes beyond murder, which destroys all privacy, the whole family."

Rendered at the end of a highly publicized trial, the verdict of the Assize Court was nevertheless lower than the requisitions of the Advocate General, who had demanded in the morning criminal imprisonment for life against the computer scientist of 36 years.

"Not a case that could lead to a sentence of life imprisonment"

"This is not a case that could lead to a sentence of life imprisonment, because we are not in a context of a serial murderer", analyzes, meanwhile, the lawyer.

Jonathann Daval will not appeal the decision, announced one of his lawyers, Me Ornella Sportafora.
