Saarbrücken (dpa / lrs) - During controls in the fight against undeclared work and illegal employment, customs at the Kaiserslautern, Landau and Saarbrücken locations discovered a loss of 12.6 million euros in 2020.

In total, more than 1,000 employers were checked and almost 4,000 criminal proceedings were initiated, the main customs office in Saarbrücken announced on Monday.

In addition, fines and fines amounting to almost two million euros have been set.

The focus was on tests for compliance with the minimum wage, courier services, the construction industry, and waste, meat and agriculture.

"Experience shows that complex investigative procedures and organized forms of undeclared work are becoming more and more important," said the head of the main customs office in Saarbrücken, Hans Barth.

In 2020, the main customs office in Saarbrücken detected almost 3,200 irregularities in goods.

Almost 2400 violations occurred with the import of drugs and narcotics alone, as the customs officers announced.

With 64 kilograms of narcotics and 1,490 kilograms of water pipe tobacco, almost twice as much was seized as in the previous year.
