The sporting goods manufacturer Adidas defended the run-in clothing of the German Olympic team from Tokyo against criticism.
"The clothing for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo was presented at the beginning of May and received a lot of positive feedback," said a company spokesman on Friday when asked by the dpa.
The collection was developed in close cooperation with the athletes' commission of the German Olympic Sports Confederation.
"The involvement of the athletes is very important to us and was guaranteed at all times during the design process," emphasized the Adidas spokesman.
However, not all athletes were apparently satisfied with the selection.
“Who is responsible for this outfit?” Wrote national basketball player Maodo Lo on Friday in his Instagram story and was not very enthusiastic about his clothes in a short video.
Teammate Niels Giffey added: “Who will come up with this?” Lo put his question on the social network directly to the manufacturer Adidas and Team Germany.
The mint green outfit with an idiosyncratic vest and neon-colored shoes quickly sparked discussions on the internet. “Nobody can take away the gold medal for the ugliest outfits,” wrote a user on Twitter. Another said: "Wow, you can always rely on the tastelessness of the Germans' outfits at the Olympic Games!"
