A 20-meter crane collapsed on Wednesday at a construction site and adjacent houses in east London, leaving one dead and four injured, aid workers in the British capital said.

"A 20-meter crane collapsed on an apartment building under construction and two houses," said the firefighters, who deployed a "complex rescue operation".

Union calls for investigation

Rescue services said they had counted four injured, two of whom were hospitalized with head injuries. "Unfortunately, despite the efforts of our emergency services, a fifth person was found dead at the scene," said a spokesman for the emergency services.

Union official Jerry Swain of the Unite Alliance has called for an investigation, the preliminary findings of which should be "released within weeks, rather than months or years, so that similar accidents are prevented in the future."
