The announcement was described as "collective punishment" by elected officials in Marseille.

Faced with the rebound of the coronavirus epidemic, the Minister of Health Olivier Véran announced on Wednesday a new battery of measures, including the closure of bars and restaurants in the metropolis of Aix-Marseille.

The first deputy mayor of Marseille Benoît Payan denounced Thursday an "affront" after the announcement "without consultation" by the government of "incredible restrictions" in the city to fight against Covid-19.

"Once again, our territory is singled out," blasted Benoît Payan, replacing left-wing mayor Michèle Rubirola, who recently underwent an operation.

"With Madam Mayor, we ask the government 10 days before the implementation of new measures", he added, assuring that the actions carried out by the city "had started to bear fruit".
