07.00 Health rushes vaccines "close to expiring" with new groups, such as the immunosuppressed

Minister Carolina Darias said this Wednesday that "she has no record" of the number of covid vaccines that have expired in Spain, although she has admitted that some "close to expiring" have begun to be used in the latest groups incorporated, such as the immunosuppressed.

At a press conference after the Interterritorial Health Council and in reference to the announcement by Catalonia that has reported that it has almost 70,000 expired vaccines, the minister admitted that "losing vaccines is not pleasant" and explained that, at the moment, works on "balancing the logistics of the vaccines that are in the fridge to continue inoculating", preferably to the new groups, which are the first recipients.

Darias has insisted that he does not have data from other communities on expired vaccines and has valued that 69.5 million doses have already been inoculated and the "commendable" work of the autonomies "focused" on capturing the collectives and age groups that still lack.

At the press conference, Darias also referred to the hypothetical second dose of Janssen and the extension of third doses to other groups, such as those over 80 years of age.

The head of Health has commented that this matter is subject to "permanent evaluation" by the Committee on Vaccines and, therefore, it is waiting for him to make a proposal.

07.00 13 Communities begin this week to administer the third dose of the vaccine in residences

Thirteen communities have begun to inoculate this week the additional dose of the vaccine against covid-19 to the elderly in residences, after its approval last week by the Ministry of Health and the autonomies, while another five are finalizing the details to begin to do it shortly.

According to Imserso data, the 297,905 elderly residents in senior centers in Spain are being administered serums from Pfizer or Moderna.

In addition to residents, the additional dose has begun to be injected to patients on hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis, undergoing treatment for cancer, over 40 years with Down syndrome and patients with oncohematological disease undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatment.

Since its approval, many communities have begun to administer this booster dose in centers for the elderly, such as Andalusia, which has 19,380 residents, Aragon (15,504), Balearic Islands (4,284), Catalonia (47,626), Cantabria ( 5,765), Valencian Community (20,317), Extremadura (13,851), Madrid (41,227), Murcia (4,811), Basque Country (15,939), Navarra (5,442), Ceuta (172) and Melilla.

In addition, Castilla y León will begin tomorrow to supply the third dose in residences and Galicia plans to do so before the end of this week.

For its part, Castilla-La Mancha will do it next Monday, September 27.

Other communities such as La Rioja, Asturias and the Canaries, which have begun to inoculate the serum to patients with immunosuppression problems, have reported that people in residences will receive the additional dose soon.
