Highlights, new measures, new reports: an update on the latest developments in the Covid-19 pandemic around the world.

- Cap of 5 million in India -

The pandemic is advancing at high speed across India, which crossed the threshold of five million people infected on Wednesday after registering one million new cases in just 11 days.

The second most populous country on the planet with 1.3 billion inhabitants, India now has a total of 5.02 million people carrying the virus, just behind the United States, with 6.6 million cases of Covid-19.

- "Vaccine nationalism" -

The President of the European Commission warned on Wednesday of the dangers of "vaccine nationalism", while Europeans faced the Covid-19 pandemic in dispersed order and the search for a vaccine is the subject of a global competition.

"Vaccine nationalism puts lives at risk," Ursula von der Leyen told the European Parliament, as major powers pre-reserve doses of the developing anti-Covid vaccines at great expense.

- More than 936,000 dead -

The pandemic caused by the new coronavirus has killed more than 936,000 people worldwide since the end of December, according to a report established by AFP from official sources on Wednesday at 11:00 GMT.

More than 29.6 million cases of contamination have been diagnosed.

The United States is the most bereaved country with 195,961 dead.

Next come Brazil (133,119), India (82,066), Mexico (71,678) and the United Kingdom (41,664).

- Reconfinement envisaged in Madrid -

The region of Madrid, the epicenter of the rebound of the Covid-19 epidemic in Spain, announced on Wednesday that it was planning to confine areas of the city or region with the largest increase in the number of contaminations.

"Restrictions on gatherings of people and also on mobility" will be announced "by the end of the week," an official said.

- Mixed outlook for the OECD -

The global recession should be less pronounced than expected in 2020, estimates the OECD in its economic outlook published on Wednesday, the rapid and consistent reaction of states having made it possible to limit the damage.

But the recovery is expected to be weaker in 2021 than it anticipated in June.

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) expects growth of 5% in 2021, after a decline of 4.5% in 2020.

- Heavy losses for football -

A loss of $ 14 billion: this is what the Covid-19 pandemic could cost world football, responsible for schedule disruptions, empty stadiums and other losses of television rights, according to the International Football Federation (Fifa) .

- 460 billion losses for tourism -

The fall in the number of international tourists due to the pandemic resulted in a loss of 460 billion dollars for the sector in the first half of the year, estimates the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

The cause is a 65% drop in the number of international tourists over the period, marked by border closures and restrictions for travelers.
