The overall toll in Spain of confirmed coronavirus infections increased by almost 10,800 compared to the previous day and reached 682,267 cases.

This is what data from the Ministry of Health show, while the region of Catalonia has stated that it will further limit public gatherings.

The data included 3,125 cases diagnosed in the past 24 hours, but these daily figures tend to get much higher after retroactive contagion count updates, which for most of the past week exceeded 10,000 cases per day.

With 21 deaths from the virus on the last day, the total number of deaths from Covid-19 reached 30,904.

More than 10,600 people are in hospital with Covid-19, 1,348 of them in intensive care.

Coronavirus patients occupy nearly 10 percent of all hospital capacity across Spain, but in the hardest-hit regions like Madrid, that share reached 25.5 percent, with doctors complaining of understaffing and resources.

Catalonia's health authorities said they will limit gatherings to six people - compared to ten today - in the northeastern region to reduce the spread of the virus.

In some of Madrid's working-class neighborhoods, where infections have increased, regional authorities have ordered a partial lockdown since Monday, sparking protests and accusations of discrimination against the poorest areas.

France returns to above 10,000 cases

After a weekend of lower figures, the number of new positives in France in the last 24 hours has returned to over 10,000.

10.008, according to public health data.

Deaths are also increasing, today 68 more than yesterday, for a total of 31,416 since the beginning of the epidemic. The positive rate of the tests has risen over 6% for the first time to reach 6.1%.
