The health authorities in Germany reported 5412 new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) within one day.

This is evident from the numbers from Monday morning, which reflect the status of the RKI dashboard at 5:03 a.m.

For comparison: a week ago the value was 6922 infections.

On Monday, the case numbers reported by the RKI are usually lower, among other things because fewer tests are carried out on the weekend.

Due to the public holiday on May 13th, when interpreting the number of cases, it should be noted that fewer people visit a doctor on public holidays and bridging days, which means that fewer samples are taken and fewer laboratory tests are carried out, according to the RKI's management report on Sunday.

"This means that fewer pathogens are reported to the responsible health authorities."

Seven-day R-value continues to decline

According to the RKI, the number of new infections reported within seven days per 100,000 inhabitants was 83.1 nationwide on Monday morning (previous day: 83.1; previous week: 119.1).

According to the information, 64 new deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours.

A week ago there were 54 dead.

The RKI has counted a total of 3,598,846 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, however, since many infections are not recognized.

The RKI stated the number of those who had recovered at around 3,300,700.

The number of people who died with or with a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 86,160.

According to the RKI situation report on Sunday, the nationwide seven-day R-value was 0.82 (previous day: 0.84).

This means that 100 infected people theoretically infect 82 more people.

The R-value represents the occurrence of the infection 8 to 16 days ago.

If it is below 1 for a longer period of time, the infection process subsides;

if it is consistently higher, the number of cases increases.

Tourism possible in some countries

A few days before Pentecost, Schleswig-Holstein will open to tourists on Monday under certain conditions. In other areas, too, public life in the northern state is being ramped up again. Bars are allowed to reopen their interiors, and excursion boats are allowed to take guests on board again. The general manager of the hotel and restaurant association (Dehoga), Ingrid Hartges, called on the other countries to take the northern federal state as an example.

So far, overnight stays for tourists have only been possible in four model regions of Schleswig-Holstein. The state has the lowest corona infection rate nationwide. On Sunday evening, the Ministry of Health in Kiel gave the seven-day incidence per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days at 35.1. For the openings, however, tourists have to meet hygiene requirements such as wearing protective masks in certain situations and negative corona tests before arrival and then every three days. When visiting bars, a negative test result or proof of vaccination protection is required.

Dehoga managing director Hartges said on the ARD program “Anne Will” on Sunday evening: “I think we can learn from Schleswig-Holstein.” Despite the model regions, the number of infections has fallen.

The industry is not a pandemic driver, has long made a "special sacrifice" and needs new prospects.

The so-called 3G principle “vaccinated, recovered, tested” also creates a great deal of security.

It is about a responsible opening, Hartges made clear.

Hamburg is also thinking about opening up

In several regions of Baden-Württemberg, restaurants and hotels have been open again since Saturday. Other federal states have also promised easing before Pentecost. Hamburg's Mayor Peter Tschentscher wants to propose to his Senate on Tuesday to reopen outdoor catering at Pentecost, as he said at "Anne Will".

Lower Saxony and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, where the seven-day incidences are approaching the 50 mark, are taking a more cautious path than neighboring Schleswig-Holstein.

Lower Saxony initially only opened tourism to residents of the state.

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, gastronomy is allowed to reopen from Pentecost Sunday - outside and inside.

Tourism in the state will be possible on June 7th for residents of the state and on June 14th for guests from the other states.

Dietmar Bartsch, the left-wing parliamentary group leader in the Bundestag with constituency in Rostock, said in the "Anne Will" broadcast that he did not make sense.

"Now that is being postponed a lot."

The vaccination is progressing

In the meantime, vaccination against the corona virus is making significant progress in Germany.

In some federal states, the prioritization of vaccinations in medical practices ends: Baden-Württemberg and Berlin begin this Monday, Bavaria is expected to follow in the course of the week, Saxony on May 24.

However, in many places there may not be enough vaccine available to be able to offer vaccination appointments quickly to all those who want to be vaccinated.

In the vaccination centers, the prioritization still remains.

More than 30 million people in Germany have received at least one corona vaccination, and a good 9 million have full vaccination protection.
