The protest by opponents of the Corona policy in Berlin is increasingly escalating.

On Wednesday morning, several thousand people gathered on Straße des 17. Juni to demonstrate against the reform of the Infection Protection Act.

In the meantime, the police have ordered the meeting to be dissolved.

The demonstration with more than 8,000 participants posed a threat to public safety, the police said.

There are ongoing and extensive violations of infection protection.

Minimum distances were repeatedly disregarded, and mouth and nose protection was often not worn.

According to their own statements, the police have arrested seven people for attacking officials and attempting to free prisoners.

Videos also show police using tear gas as protesters attempt to break barriers.

There were also bottles thrown at the emergency services, as the police reported.

According to a WELT reporter on site, the situation is escalating.

Protesters had chanted shouts like “Peace, freedom, no dictatorship”.

A poster read: "No to the Citizens' Empowerment Act".

Whistles and drums could be heard.

Among the participants was the deputy AfD federal spokesman Stefan Brandner as well as right-wing and right-wing extremists.

The police repeatedly called for compliance with the corona hygiene rules via loudspeaker.

The police are in action with a large number of around 2,200 officers.

The Reichstag building and the Brandenburg Gate were cordoned off over a large area.

Water cannons are ready and can be used "if necessary," said a police spokesman.
