The Inner Bay of Lübeck model region is postponing the cautious restart of tourism planned for next Monday for an indefinite period.

The reason given by the initiators and the Ostholstein district on Wednesday was the dynamic corona infection.

According to the state government, the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days was 76.8 as of Tuesday evening.

The prerequisite for model projects are values stable below 100.

The Lübeck Bay project includes the communities of Timmendorfer Strand, Scharbeutz and Sierksdorf as well as the city of Neustadt.

Since Monday, tourists in the north have been allowed to vacation again in the Schleiregion and in Eckernförde, subject to strict rules.

According to the current status, the other model regions of North Friesland and Büsum want to start in May.

The respective district decides on the start or termination of a project after the assessment by the health department.

"We are ready for a cautious opening as soon as the situation permits," said André Rosinski, director of the Lübecker Bucht tourism agency.

"The infrastructure for extensive testing of vacationers is organized and can be activated within a very short time."

Model projects are linked to strict hygiene rules, corona tests at close range and the option of electronic contact tracking.

The projects are intended to prove that a safe holiday is possible under Corona conditions.

"Because of the continuous increase in incidence and the increasingly complex follow-up of contact persons, it is not justifiable at this point in time to start the model project Inner Bay of Lübeck," said Ostholstein's District Administrator Reinhard Sager.

"The tourist actors on the Baltic Sea coast have my whole understanding of their extremely difficult situation."

Tourism Minister Bernd Buchholz assessed the postponement of the project as a sign of responsible handling of the situation.

“That's a good thing,” said the FDP politician.

If the corona numbers increase, as in Ostholstein, you have to see whether you can implement such a project.

In such a situation, it is better to postpone the project than to start it and then flop with it.

“I am completely on the side of the district administrator and his decision.

"Guests are ready to take regular tests"

The requirements for the companies and the communities are high, but understandable and reasonable in terms of security, said Joachim Nitz, managing director of Timmendorfer Strand Niendorf Tourismus GmbH. “The guests also understand the higher workload and are happy to take on the regular tests in order to be able to spend nice and safe days on the Baltic Sea.” Unfortunately, now vacationers have to be put off to countless inquiries. The expectations of a predictable perspective on opening are high.
