Berlin (dpa / bb) - After a year of the Corona crisis, a good third more women and men were registered as unemployed in Berlin in March than before.
There were a total of 209,856. That was 55,607 more than in March 2020, as the regional directorate Berlin-Brandenburg announced to the Federal Employment Agency on Wednesday (March 11th).
The unemployment rate fell slightly compared to February to 10.5 percent.
However, it is 2.6 percentage points higher than in March 2020.
Short-time work has so far prevented even more people from losing their jobs.
According to the latest available figures, a good 121,000 employees were on short-time work in December.
In March, however, fewer companies than before reported short-time work.
"Above all, their massive use has relieved companies and cushioned those affected socially," said the Berlin-Brandenburg agency director Ramona Schröder.
"We have to assume that the difficult situation will continue for the time being and that it will only be possible to ease the situation in the course of the year."
There are still heavy loads in the hospitality industry, retail trade, tourism and many service sectors.
According to the data, long-term unemployment is also increasing, i.e. the number of people who have been unemployed for more than a year.
