Colombia has just dealt a serious blow to organized crime.

The country's most wanted drug trafficker, Dairo Antonio Usuga, known as "Otoniel", has been captured in northwest Colombia, the government said on Saturday.

“Special gratitude to the security forces (…) for the capture in Necocli of Dairo Antonio Usuga, alias 'Otoniel', senior leader of the Clan del Golfo”, congratulated Emilio Archila, adviser to President Ivan Duque on Twitter.

Colombia is the world's largest exporter of cocaine.

The mighty Clan del Golfo

In view of the extent of his traffic, Otoniel was not only of interest to his country.

The United States had thus offered a reward of 5 million dollars for his capture.

The drug trafficker was eventually arrested in Necocli, one of the main strongholds of Clan del Golfo, near the border with Panama.

Otoniel, 50, was the head of drug trafficking gangs made up of former members of paramilitary groups who waged a fierce struggle against leftist guerrillas until the 2010s. The Clan del Golfo is present in nearly 300 municipalities in the region. country, according to independent think tank Indepaz.
