Chinese authorities have temporarily banned Tencent, one of the country's largest internet companies, from updating its apps and launching new apps.
Because of this measure, updates to more than 100 mobile games and more than 70 apps developed by the company are blocked.
As a reminder, Tencent counts among these applications the WeChat messaging service used by more than 1.2 billion people.
The company will also not be able to launch new games and applications during this period.
However, current games and applications remain accessible.
The measure is announced as temporary, but for the moment, no information on the duration has been communicated.
Tencent is docile
In a statement, the Tencent company said it will cooperate with the authorities, “We are constantly working to improve the user protection features in our applications.
We regularly cooperate with relevant government agencies to comply with legal and administrative regulations.
"
This decision comes at a time when the Chinese government has tightened the rules and controls vis-à-vis companies working on the Internet.
Promulgated in 2017, the law on the protection of personal data entered into force in November.
This particularly strict law governs the transfer of data across borders and monitors the use of personal data by national companies.
According to China Central Television (CCTV), Tencent has carried out nine offenses since the beginning of the year, which would have prompted the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to take these "administrative measures".
