"China welcomes the initiative of President Putin to hold a video summit on the Iranian nuclear issue and highly appreciates Russia's efforts to reduce tensions around the Iranian nuclear issue and strengthen regional security," the press service of the PRC Foreign Ministry quoted him as saying.

Lijian also pledged that China adheres to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), is committed to stability in the Middle East, and intends to continue cooperation with all parties to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed the online summit on Iran with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo by phone.

On August 14, Putin proposed to urgently convene an online summit on the Iranian nuclear deal, as well as develop security mechanisms in the Persian Gulf zone.

US President Donald Trump said he was unlikely to support Putin's idea.
