According to the climate targets that have now been submitted, China wants to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by more than 65 percent compared to 2005.
In the previous version of its climate targets, China had aimed to reduce emissions by 60 to 65 percent by 2030.
China, which is responsible for more than a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions, is one of the signatory states to the Paris climate protection agreement of 2015. In the agreement, the international community agreed to reduce global warming to well below two degrees, but if possible to 1, 5 degrees compared to the pre-industrial age.
With the agreement, the signatory states also undertook to submit new, ambitious national climate protection contributions (NDC) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions every five years.
The Chinese President Xi Jinping had already announced the goal of climate neutrality in September of last year before the UN General Assembly.
Officially, Beijing had not yet submitted its new NDC to the UN.
