On September 18, 2020 Zhongguancun Forum Global Science and Life and Health Forum was held in Beijing.

At the meeting, Chen Wei, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a researcher of the Academy of Military Sciences, introduced the research and development progress of recombinant new crown vaccine.

Regarding the impact of virus mutations of public concern on vaccine effectiveness, Chen Wei said that as of September 2020, there are about 60,000 high-quality whole-genome sequences in public databases, sampled from more than 105 countries and regions on 6 continents.

According to bioinformatics statistics, the current mutation site of the virus is D614G, which is located in the B cell antigen region. According to homology modeling, the mutation has little effect on the structure of this region.

At the same time, D614G is relatively far away from the receptor binding domain (RBD), so the mutation has minimal impact on the vaccine.
