This is bad news for the French who receive a low salary, even if with regard to inflation their purchasing power will increase slightly.

The minimum wage will “probably” not be increased this year beyond what the group of experts on the minimum wage recommends, ie “between 1% and 1.2%”, the Prime Minister said Wednesday on RMC and BFMTV, Jean Castex.

An increase "not wonderful, but not negligible either"

The report submitted Tuesday to the Minister of Labor, Elisabeth Borne, recommends sticking to the automatic revaluation of the minimum wage, estimated at around 1%.

It will therefore be "something between 1% and 1.2%, we have not yet taken the decision," said the Prime Minister.

"Given the economic situation, [it] will still be an increase which is obviously not wonderful, but not negligible either," he added.

At the end of November, inflation was up 0.2% over one year according to INSEE.

13 euros more per month for the minimum wage on January 1st ...

The expert group estimates that an increase of 1% would guarantee "an increase in purchasing power greater than last year", when the minimum wage had been revalued by 1.2%, without a boost, for 2, 3 million beneficiaries.

The minimum wage currently stands at 1,219 euros net monthly.

Consulted every year since 2008 before each revaluation, the group of experts has always advised governments not to give a "boost".

"Unacceptable" for the CGT

The CGT immediately deplored an “ideological posture” with music that “makes one think of a broken record”.

However, for the union, with the Covid-19 crisis, "this year, more than ever, the government must make the choice to significantly increase the minimum wage" so that it reaches 1,800 euros gross, and "be limited to the only automatic revaluation would be unacceptable ”.

For FO too, the recommendations "tirelessly advocated year after year by the group of experts" are "particularly unwelcome given the context of the crisis".

The union claims "a significant boost", with a minimum wage increased to 1,480 euros net.
