It is home to 600 km of waterways.

This is much less than the 2,500 km of its coastline which attracts millions of visitors every summer.

But, in recent years, the canals and rivers of Brittany have attracted more and more curious people, who like to walk there on foot and especially by bike.

Driven by the desire for “four seasons” tourism and to “disperse” visitors throughout its territory, the region wanted to make up for the lack of infrastructure along the canals by opening its lock houses.

Created to house the lock keepers, these 156 houses have suffered from the drastic drop in navigation and the rural exodus. Many of them remained abandoned for a long time, suffering the wrath of time and the Breton weather, which is nevertheless deemed charming. About ten years ago, the region decided to "lend" these pretty stone houses to people capable of bringing the canals to life. Cottages on the water, a fishing house, boat or bicycle rental companies have flourished here and there. But not all of them have yet found takers. “It's a very nice life. It's never sad because there are always people passing by. We don't feel isolated,” confided an owner based in Hédé-Bazouges.

The region, in agreement with Redon agglomeration, has just launched a call for projects concerning three lock houses located in Bains-sur-Oust, Saint-Vincent-sur-Oust and Peillac, and a stopover lodge located in Avessac.

Interested parties will have to propose "new and innovative nautical activities" or a range of services for seafarers and traveling bicycles.

Open to individuals, companies, associations and communities, the call for projects runs until August 2022.
