Berlin (dpa) - The pop-up cycle paths in the Berlin district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg have been honored with the German Bicycle Prize.
The cycle path project in the wake of the corona pandemic took first place in the “Infrastructure” category, according to a statement on Tuesday.
The quick implementation and the successful cooperation between different administrative levels in Berlin were praised.
After the start of the corona pandemic, the Senate and districts began to mark cycle paths on parking lanes or car lanes and to set up signs and warning beacons in April 2020.
Many Berliners do not have a car and buses and trains are too narrow, it was said, among other reasons.
There are now dozens of such cycle paths in several districts - many of which are to remain permanent.
In the course of this year, all pop-up cycle paths in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg are to be converted into a permanent cycle infrastructure.

The German Bicycle Prize is a nationwide competition that has been honoring the most innovative measures to promote cycling every year since 2000.
The initiators are the Federal Ministry of Transport and the working group for pedestrian and bicycle-friendly cities, municipalities and districts in North Rhine-Westphalia.
