The air quality in Hesse's largest city has developed positively overall in recent months, said Environment Minister Priska Hinz (Greens) in Wiesbaden.
Therefore, no driving bans would have to be introduced from July 1st.
The city has introduced more bike lanes and more public transport, as well as a speed limit.
The changed mobility in the corona pandemic also contributed to lower traffic in the big city.
The environment minister emphasized that there could not yet be a complete all-clear, as the measured values are increasing in some cases. This means that driving bans from October 1st are not yet off the table. In order to improve the air quality in Hesse's largest city, a new clean air plan with numerous measures came into force at the end of last year. This was to ensure that the applicable limit values for nitrogen dioxide are complied with as quickly as possible. The impending driving bans relate to older diesel vehicles and gasoline-powered vehicles.
In a ruling at the end of 2019, the Hessian Administrative Court (VGH) obliged the city to examine driving ban zones for diesel vehicles so that the nitrogen oxide limit of 40 micrograms per cubic meter of air is complied with.
The starting point was a lawsuit by Deutsche Umwelthilfe against the state of Hesse due to excessive air pollution from diesel exhaust gases.
Driving bans were introduced in Darmstadt as the first city in Hesse.
