01 July 2020
The 2020 summer season begins with the minus sign both because of Covid-19 and the adverse weather conditions, even if the reservations for July and August bode well. "For beach entrepreneurs, the summer season - says Antonio Capacchione, president of the Italian Seaside Trade Union member of Fipe Confcommercio - started late and with the concentration of weekends". The presences compared to the same period of 2019 are decreasing in all regions: the most serious losses in Sardinia (-80%), Lazio and Molise (-75%) and in Campania and Basilicata (-70%). Friuli Venezia Giulia (-65%) and Sicily (-60%), Calabria (-55%), Veneto and Abruzzo (-50%) are not much better. Declines of 45% in Liguria and Marche, 40% in Emilia Romagna and Puglia, 30% in Tuscany.

"The luckiest ones - says Capacchione - have had the authorizations to set up their structures only in late May in order to be able to open gates at the end of the month. But only in the second half of June did the first tourists start to use the services of beach, always delivered taking into account the safety protocols. Good attendance on weekends, but the numbers found are absolutely not enough to raise the accounts after a totally missed spring ". "The main cause, also for our category, was the Covid-19 pandemic - he adds - and the consequent economic crisis, so much so that some bathing establishments this summer have decided not to open at all because it would not have been profitable, with the consequence the loss of several jobs, not only seasonal. To this were added the adverse weather conditions, more and more decisive with the concentration of the presences on the weekend, so if you "lose" on Sunday, it is in fact frustrated, the entire week's collection. " "The months of July and August will be decisive to raise the balance sheets and recover the season - concludes Capacchione -: this is the hope of the beach entrepreneurs (thanks to the good weather and the decrease in infections), since many of our compatriots will choose the coasts Italians to spend their holidays, giving up travel abroad. Today the data relating to the first bookings are very good and bode well ".
