The women's four has sensationally set a world record at the Olympic track cycling competitions.
Franziska Brauße (Eningen), Lisa Brennauer (Durach), Lisa Klein (Erfurt) and Mieke Kröger (Bielefeld) drove in Izu on Monday in the qualification in 4: 07.307 minutes and thus improved the old fabulous time of the British women in 2016 (4: 10,236) by almost three seconds.
When the time at the Izu Velodrome was stopped, Brennauer clenched his fist to the cheering of the audience.
In contrast to the competitions in Tokyo, spectators are allowed in Izu.
"I have to cry," said ZDF expert Kristina Vogel.
This means that the German team has a good chance of reaching the finals of the two best teams.
In the next round, a win against the Italians, who were almost four seconds slower in qualifying, is enough.
The British team (4: 09.022) came closest to the German time.
The next round will be played on Tuesday (8.30 a.m. CEST in the FAZ live ticker for the Olympics, on ZDF and on Eurosport).
The two world champions Lea Sophie Friedrich and Emma Hinze also set the fastest times in qualifying.
The duo was stopped in 32.102 seconds at the Izu Velodrome and at least set a German record.
Record world champions Vogel and Miriam Welte held the old best time.
In the first round (9.50 a.m. CEST), Hinze and Friedrich will now face the Ukraine.
Then it is already a question of which teams will contest the final and the bronze medal run.
Friedrich (Dassow) and Hinze (Cottbus) won gold together with Pauline Grabosch (Erfurt) at the 2020 World Cup in Berlin.
