According to an official French report, two consecutive avalanches occurred in the Alps in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of southeastern France on the 8th, killing at least 7 people.
Rescue work is still ongoing.
The first avalanche in the Alps that day occurred in the town of Vallarar at an altitude of 2,642 meters. Five climbers were trapped in the avalanche.
Rescuers found only one survivor, and the remaining 4 people were killed.
The age of the victims ranged from 42 to 76 years old.
The survivors who were found have been taken to the hospital for treatment.
The second avalanche in the Alps occurred in the Prije area at an altitude of 3,779 meters. Initial reports indicate that three people died in the avalanche.
Savoie officials stated that rescue work is still ongoing to ensure that no one is trapped by the avalanche.
Earlier this week, avalanches occurred in Hautes-Alpes and Isère in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, killing 5 people.
Both provinces are adjacent to Savoie.
The small town of Vila d’Aren in Hautes-Alpes suffered an avalanche on the 3rd.
After the avalanche, the authorities quickly dispatched a helicopter to the scene for rescue.
Rescuers found three dead at the scene, of which two were climbers and one was a guide.
The place where the deceased was found is in the Alps at an altitude of 3200 meters.
An avalanche occurred on the 3rd in Elfvard, a small town in the province of Isère, which is also located in the Alps.
Rescuers found 2 people dead and 1 injured.
The dead and injured were all climbers.
The French Meteorological Department has reminded the public of the danger of avalanches in the Alps and issued a yellow warning.
The Savoie government stated that climbers and hikers should be extra careful in the Alps; this week’s warm weather has greatly increased the risk of avalanches.
