Bickenbach (dpa / lhe) - The Hessian asparagus farmers officially opened the season for fine vegetables this year on Thursday in Bickenbach in southern Hesse.
Asparagus queen Saskia I. pricked the first poles for the opening in a field in the municipality in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district with a crown, sash and work gloves.
"I expect a good harvest when the weather is right," said the chairman of the Asparagus Working Group in South Hesse, Rolf Meinhardt.
The price for premium asparagus is expected to level off at the level of previous years.
At the moment, however, it is a little more expensive.
Around Easter the prices were 17 to 18 euros per kilo.
According to the Hessian farmers' association, there are 120 asparagus farmers across the country whose cultivation area is larger than half a hectare.
In 2020, asparagus could also be pricked on 1671 hectares.
The total harvest in the country was 8,500 tons, two years earlier it was 10,900. According to the Federal Statistical Office, almost 117,600 tons were harvested in all of Germany in the first Corona year 2020, ten percent less than the year before.
The asparagus harvest in Germany usually begins in the second half of April and traditionally lasts until "St. John's Day" on June 24th.
