Rendsburg (dpa / lno) - Even if the weather doesn't look like it: the asparagus season has started in Schleswig-Holstein.

The first week of April is an early start for the northernmost state, announced the Chamber of Agriculture on Tuesday.

The quantities are still small in the first days of harvest.

Most of the farms will not start harvesting until mid to late April.

The chamber expects that the share of direct marketing will continue to increase this year, since due to the corona there is a lack of sales via gastronomy in large parts.

According to the Chamber of Agriculture, there are currently enough harvest workers.

The challenges for the companies are great because of the pandemic-related hygiene measures for employees and customers.

In Schleswig-Holstein around 50 farms grow asparagus on around 400 hectares of harvested land.
