Kutzleben (dpa / th) - With the start of the harvest at the asparagus farm Kutzleben (Unstrut-Hainich district), the asparagus season began on Thursday despite the current winter cold in Thuringia.
“We still have growth - albeit at a reduced rate,” said managing director Jan-Niclas Imholze.
The hours of sunshine are particularly important - and there were enough of them between snow and icy wind.
"This is currently starting and can change every hour," said the managing director of the Association of East German Asparagus and Soft Fruit Growers (Vosba), Jürgen Schulze.
The asparagus grows slower due to the cold weather, but with milder temperatures on weekends, more and more farms should be able to follow suit.
At the same time as the start of the harvest, the asparagus farm Kutzleben could take a step out of bankruptcy on its own.
Erfurt lawyer Rolf Rombach, who accompanies the asparagus farm during the renovation, explained that an acquirer was buying essential fixed assets from the bankruptcy estate and preparing for the 2021 harvest.
If the creditors' meeting approves this purchase, the asparagus harvest is certain for the next few years.

With a harvest area of around 160 hectares, Kutzleben is one of the largest asparagus producers in Thuringia.
The asparagus farm harvests up to 900 tons of these precious vegetables every year.
