Armed man suspected of asking police to shoot him

A man is suspected of having threatened three police officers on Tuesday near the Mosson stadium in Montpellier (Hérault), indicates the prosecutor, Fabrice Bélargent.

Shortly before 6 p.m., the three police officers noticed that an individual was approaching with a knife in hand.

The man is then suspected of having addressed them, telling them that he was a "jihadist" and that he wanted "to end his life".

Sentenced five times

Despite the orders of the police, he allegedly continued to advance, asking them to shoot him.

"Showing a coolness that should be emphasized, one of the police officers fired a shot in the air with his service weapon," said the prosecutor.

The individual then fled and was arrested in the evening at his home.

The man was taken into police custody for attempted voluntary homicide on persons holding public authority and for advocating terrorism.

The investigation was entrusted to the SRPJ of Montpellier.

The anti-terrorist prosecution did not take up the case.

The suspect has already been convicted five times, in particular for acts of theft and willful violence.

He is also the subject of psychiatric monitoring.
