Last month's domestic shipments of so-called white goods such as air conditioners and refrigerators amounted to more than 200 billion yen, 18% higher than the same month last year, the highest level in 25 years for April.

The main reason is that the so-called nesting demand continues due to the influence of the new coronavirus.

According to the Japan Electrical Manufacturers' Association, the domestic shipment value of white goods last month was 204.4 billion yen, 18.8% higher than the same month last year.

Shipments have exceeded the same month of the previous year for the seventh consecutive month since October last year, the highest level in 25 years for April.

The main reason for this is that the time spent at home has increased due to the state of emergency of the new coronavirus, and the so-called nesting demand is increasing.

By product, air conditioners increased by 31% compared to the same month last year, refrigerators increased by 16%, and washing machines increased by 5%.

In addition, due to heightened consumer awareness of hygiene, air purifiers accounted for 51% and dehumidifiers accounted for 40%, both of which increased significantly compared to the same month last year.

Regarding the outlook for the future, the Japan Electrical Manufacturers' Association says, "We expect that the high level of related products will continue in the future due to the demand for nesting and the spread of telework."
