Angela Merkel denounces the racist "murder" of African-American George Floyd

Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday denounced the "murder" of African-American George Floyd by police and the "racism" which she believes strikes a "very polarized American society".

"  This murder of George Floyd is a terrible thing. Racism is a terrible thing. American society is very polarized,  ”lamented the Chancellor on the public channel ZDF. The four police officers who arrested George Floyd in Minneapolis are now all being prosecuted and his death has been classified as "  murder  " , as claimed by the hundreds of thousands of Americans who have demonstrated since last week. 

Asked about US President Donald Trump, Angela Merkel said her "  political style is very controversial  ". “  For me, you have to strive when you are responsible for working towards the cohesion of society. I hope the United States can achieve it. I am very happy that many demonstrating peacefully contribute to it,  ”said Angela Merkel in particular .

“ Racism has always existed. And unfortunately, this is also the case in Germany, let's not forget. I hope that the United States can peacefully overcome the current situation  , "added the Chancellor.

“  I work with all elected presidents around the world. And of course with the American president  , ”argued the German leader. "  All I can do is hope that we can work together,  " she concluded. The chancellor, who has been in power since 2005, ends her current mandate in 2021.
