An Indian escapes from the mortuary and dies days later

An Indian died days after his rescue, as he had been wrongly declared dead and placed in a refrigerator for the dead in Tamil Nadu, according to the BBC.

Balasubramaniam's death was first reported on Monday after he was hospitalized.

And he was placed in the fridge until the next day when the undertakers who had come to collect his body for the funeral saw that he was shivering and realized he was alive.

Then he was transferred to a second hospital, but he lost his battle with al-Hayat yesterday (Friday).

The dean of the government hospital in the southern city of Salem, Dr. Balajinathan, said that the patient was transferred to them while he was in a state of drowsiness after his rescue and died due to lung problems.

He explained to the "BBC" that it was not clear exactly how many hours he spent with subramanium in the refrigerator.

After a doctor at a private hospital declared his death on Monday, his family took his body home and called a local contractor to send a refrigerator to put him inside.

Then they informed the relatives that they would hold a funeral on Tuesday.

The funeral company said that Balasubramaniam's brother told them that he had "a letter signed by a doctor regarding his death."

Sinthel Kumar, Salem Police Chief, said the family had been unable to produce the medical certificate for the death of Balasubramaniam.

A case was filed against the family for "acting recklessly or negligently to endanger human life."

The police chief explained that the family claims that he also suffered from neurological problems.

He lived in Alasubramaniam with his wife, two daughters and brother.

It is not clear how he survived the cold temperatures inside the refrigerator - or whether he was also being investigated in the private hospital, where he was initially pronounced dead.
