Al-Burhan: The situation in Sudan cannot tolerate fragmentation

Lieutenant-General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council and Commander in Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces, pointed out that the situation in the country does not tolerate fragmentation, and called on the political forces to assume their national responsibility.

According to the Sudan News Agency (SUNA), during an event to celebrate the National Day of the Armed Forces on Sunday, Al-Burhan reminded the political forces of the situation in the country, warning that it "cannot tolerate fragmentation and division."

He called on political forces to assume their national responsibility by "progressing in national consensus and sitting down for dialogue."

He said, "Time is slipping from our hands... We hope that the initiatives will end in a consensual formula in which we will complete the transitional period and conclude free and fair elections."

And he stressed that the armed forces "will remain loyal to the Sudanese people and align themselves with their national choices in all cases," stressing that "the army derives its legitimacy from its people" and that it is "at the same distance from everyone."

This coincided with the gathering of hundreds of Sudanese supporters of a political initiative supported by Al-Burhan outside the conference hall in the Sudanese capital, which has been witnessing meetings since Saturday about the recently launched initiative.

The initiative, known as "The Call of the People of Sudan", sponsored by the famous Sufi religious leader Al-Tayyib Al-Jedd and Dr. Badr, is the latest attempt to end the political turmoil in Sudan, and was welcomed by Al-Burhan late last month.

On Saturday, the conference of the initiative was launched, and Wad Badr said that the initiative brought together nearly 120 political parties, including the leaders of the Sufi orders and the leaders of tribes.

He said it aims to tackle "economic deterioration" and "achieve peace and security", and ensure that fair elections are held next year as scheduled.

He called for a "mobilization" to support the army and other security forces to ensure unity, and called on armed groups that did not attend the conference to join the initiative "even if they were opposed or conservative."

Absent from the conference was the country's main opposition coalition, the Forces of Freedom and Change, whose members were ousted from the transitional body in the Burhan coup.

Also absent were members of the Resistance Committees, unofficial groups that emerged during the 2019 protests against former President Omar al-Bashir and regularly opposed the military coup during recent demonstrations.
