At least eight cars of a passenger train derailed this Monday in the state of

Missouri

(Midwestern United States), due to a

collision with a truck

that currently leaves three dead and 50 injured, reported the local authorities.

The Amtrak

company train

, which covered the route between

Los Angeles (California)

and

Chicago (Illinois)

and which had 243 passengers and 12 crew members on board, collided with a truck at a public crossing in Mendon, Missouri, the company said in a statement.

Capt. Justin Dunn

of

the Missouri State Highway Patrol told KMIZ-TV that there are at least three deaths as a result of the crash.

The first images of the local media show several train cars overturned on the railway and people on the ground being treated.

The accident occurred after one in the afternoon local time.

Mendon is about 100 miles (160 kilometers) northeast of

Kansas City

, Missouri.

The accident occurred a day after an Amtrak train collided with a car in Northern California, killing three people.
