Serbian world number one Novak Djokovic suffered an unexpected defeat at the Dubai Free Tennis Championships after losing to the 123rd ranked Czech Jiri Veseli in two sets without a response (4-6, 7-6), in a match that brought them together today to calculate the quarter-finals. The championship is currently being held in its 30th edition at the Dubai Duty Free stadiums in the Garhoud area of Dubai, with a total prize money of $2.9 million.
Djokovic was denied his sixth title in "Dubai Tennis" after winning the years 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2020, as well as losing in Dubai and not obtaining points to reach the semi-finals, giving the Russian player Daniil Medvedev the number "1" in the world rankings.
Veseli needed an hour and 59 minutes to eliminate Djokovic, after the Czech broke the Serb's serve early, and settled the first set (6-4) in 48 minutes, before Veseli withstood Djokovic's insistence to return in the second set, and reach the tie-breaker. Who knew the Czech succeeded in resolving his result (7-4) and clinching the second set (7-6) in an hour and 11 minutes.
